TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE
The works in Nguyen’s new series, TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE, mark a significant new direction in the artist’s practice. While continuing his masterful use of oil paint and palette knife—building, layering, and manipulating paint as though sculpting it—Nguyen now introduces human figures into his luminous natural landscapes with greater prominence. Their presence speaks not only to humanity’s coexistence with and enjoyment of the natural world, but also to our impact upon it. References to climate change and the pervasive influence of technology suggest a growing self-absorption that may hinder our ability to fully engage with the environment around us.
These paintings embody a series of compelling contradictions. By placing human figures within the pristine yet dynamic landscapes he depicts, Nguyen neither condemns nor celebrates human intervention; instead, he leaves such judgments to the viewer. The artist embraces the notion that while the experience of beauty is inherently valuable, its consequences remain beyond our control. Our encounters with the natural world shape not only our personal perceptions and actions but also, inevitably, the environment itself.
